Summary - Pool enclosures and covers

The large number of systems available on the market are summarized in the following groups for comparison purposes. Without claiming completion, we assume that, according to the Pareto principle, the majority of the roofing possibilities currently offered for swimming pools and garden pools can be classified into the categories we have selected. Individual solutions or variants of single systems are not considered in the comparison and can have other advantages and disadvantages.

FlexiRoof swimming pool enclosure

  • For children little danger exists to fall into the water
  • Swimming under open sky is possible
  • Swimming under closed cover is possible, e.g. during rainy weather
  • Dirt, dust and leaves cannot get into the water
  • Animals have no access to the pool
  • Good thermal insulation: swimming from April to November is possible.
  • Solar radiation can be used to heat the pool
  • Protection against cooling by cold rainwater
  • FlexiRoof can be completely removed during midsummer season
  • No guiding elements (risk of injury, dirt) on the floor when the pool is open
  • Reduction of pool treatment products
  • The pool cover is winterproof and can therefore be used all year round.
  • Weather resistant during years of use
  • Aesthetic design
  • Inexpensive purchase price
  • Evaporation is only reduced by the construction and cannot be avoided completely.
  • no electrical opening/closing possible (as with almost all other systems)

Shutter systems

All variations consisting of individual segments are considered shutter systems.

  • Swimming under open sky is possible
  • Animals have no access to the water
  • Evaporation is avoided
  • During midsummer the cover can be completely removed
  • Electric opening is possible
  • When the roof is open, no guiding elements are on the floor.
  • Reducing the use of pool care products
  • Aesthetic Look
  • Dirt, dust and leaves may get into the water
  • Sunlight cannot be used to heat the pool
  • Cold rainwater enters the swimming pool
  • Swimming under the cover is not possible
  • Expensive purchasing costs

Indoor style pool enclosures

This term covers all roofs that have the character of indoor swimming pools. Usually telescopically movable by means of running rails mounted on the floor and various shapes from openings on the lateral end pieces to doors.

  • For children little danger exists to fall into the water
  • Dirt, dust and leaves cannot get into the water
  • Animals have no access to the pool
  • Solar radiation can be used to heat the pool
  • Protection against cooling by cold rainwater
  • Swimming under open sky is possible
  • Enclosure can be used all year round
  • Weather resistant during years of use
  • The cover cannot be completely removed in midsummer.
  • When the roofing is open, guide elements are on the floor.
  • Expensive purchasing costs
  • Aesthetic Look

Covers and foil systems without supporting elements

In this category all foils are combined without additional load-bearing elements.

  • Swimming in the open air is possible
  • Evaporation is prevented
  • In midsummer the cover can be completely removed
  • Reduction of bath care products
  • Favourable purchase price
  • Aesthetic optics
  • Children cannot stand on the pool cover
  • No thermal insulation: Minimizes swimming time in spring and autumn
  • Solar radiation cannot be used to heat the pool
  • Swimming under the roof is not possible
  • Protection against cooling by cold rainwater
  • The pool cover cannot be used all year round

Covers and foil systems with supporting elements

In this category all kinds of foils with supporting elements are classified: Simple protective sheets, insulating foils, foils with air cushion, inflatable foils with rods, ropes, etc.

  • There is little risk of children falling into the water
  • Swimming in the open air is possible
  • Animals have no access to the water
  • Evaporation is prevented
  • In midsummer the cover can be completely removed
  • When the roof is open, there are no guide elements on the floor
  • Bath care products are reduced
  • Favourable purchase price
  • Aesthetic optics
  • No thermal insulation: Swimming time reduced in spring and autumn
  • Solar radiation cannot be used to heat the pool
  • Protection against cooling by cold rainwater
  • Swimming under the roof is not possible

Pool roofing elevator systems

Elevator systems are all variants that lift the complete pool roof. Regardless which material the roof is made of - plastic, glass or materials that can be walked on.

  • There is little risk of children falling into the water
  • Dirt, dust and leaves do not get into the water
  • Animals have no access to the water
  • Good thermal insulation: swimming from April to November is possible.
  • Solar radiation can be used to heat the pool
  • Cold rainwater does not get into the pool
  • Evaporation is prevented
  • Electric opening is possible
  • Swimming under the roof is possible
  • The use of bath care products is reduced
  • The swimming pool cover can be used all year round
  • Weather resistant for many years
  • Swimming under the roof is not possible
  • The cover cannot be completely removed in midsummer
  • Expensive purchasing price
  • Poor aesthetic appearance

Pool enclosure terrace systems

Terrace systems include all types of systems in which the swimming pool roof, can be moved sideways, so that it can be used for other purposes.

  • There is little risk of children falling into the water
  • Swimming in the open air is possible
  • Dirt, dust and leaves do not get into the water
  • Animals have no access to the water
  • Good thermal insulation: swimming from April to November is possible
  • Swimming under the roof is possible
  • Cold rainwater does not reach the swimming pool
  • Evaporation is prevented
  • Use of bath care products is reduced
  • The swimming pool cover can be used all year round
  • Weather resistant for several years
  • Solar radiation cannot be used to heat the pool
  • When the roof is open, guide elements on the ground are visible
  • Expensive purchasing price

Pool cover foldable covers

The folding cover category includes all systems whose elements can be folded away sideways.

  • There is little risk of children falling into the water
  • Swimming in the open air is possible
  • Dirt, dust and leaves do not get into the water
  • Animals have no access to the water
  • Good thermal insulation: swimming from April to November is possible
